As the sole proprietor or owner of a small architecture firm, you are the engine that keeps things running. And all decisions, big and small, fall on your shoulders.
It’s a heavy burden to bear. And it can be overwhelming and exhausting.
I hear it from architect firm owners all the time –
DOES ANY OF THIS SOUND FAMILIAR?
If you find yourself thinking, “How did he get inside my head?”… read on.
You’re in the right place
YOU’RE ON YOUR OWN…
Running a firm comes with its own set of unique challenges. Creative freedom gets pushed out of the way to make room for cashflow, contracts, business development, sales, payroll, and a myriad of other necessities for running a successful business.
To add insult to injury, the design professions are highly competitive and foster a cut-through professional culture that makes it difficult to seek solutions amongst one’s peers. Anti-trust laws prevent sharing of fee structures. Competition for jobs creates a race to the bottom and makes it unlikely that fellow entrepreneurs will share their secrets for success with others. And there are few, if any, venues where architects and design professionals lift each other up and support each other.
YOU’RE ALWAYS JUGGLING…
Instead of having copious amounts of time to design and create, the small firm owner becomes a juggler. There’s not enough time in the day, there’s never enough money , and you always feel like you’re playing catch-up.
HARD WORK ISN’T ENOUGH…
It’s a daunting task – keeping your business afloat while trying to do the design work you’ve always wanted to do.
You’re working extremely hard to stay afloat and just getting by day to day. Head down, nose to the grindstone, just survive “until it gets easier”.
I know in this place it gets dark and lonely. I’ve been there before myself and I was making it work (barely), but I was exhausted. Long hours, isolation, and struggling with daily “life or death” decisions that would determine the success or failure of my business.
I didn’t know where to turn or what to do to have it go differently. I was at my wit’s end, but all I could see to do was to continue doing what I’d been doing.
I started my firm as a knee-jerk reaction to an unsatisfactory employment situation where I felt unappreciated and overlooked.
I had reached the end of my rope working for someone else. I craved the freedom, the independence, and the opportunity to make my own decisions that running an architecture practice would provide.
In desperation I simply quit my job and started doing contract work until it developed into steady income. I got the freedom I wanted. But I quickly realized that heading up my own firm came with its own set of challenges and hurdles.
I didn’t really have a plan. I was just making it up as I went along, trying not to screw up too badly.
I pulled together every bit of knowledge and information I could to professionalize my firm, brand it, market it, grow it and protect it. I started hiring staff. The decisions multiplied and the responsibility increased. I made choices – some right, some wrong. I did the best I could. Yet it never seemed to be enough. And I always felt like I was a bit behind the 8-ball, operating in the dark.
I only knew what I knew. Major decisions meant spending a ton of valuable time and precious resources to thoroughly educate myself, research every option and make the best choice I could.
I found myself mired in the business of running my business, second-guessing myself, and often crossing my fingers in hopes that I’d made the right choices in every possible area.
Going it alone left me frequently feeling isolated, lonely, and lost.

ENJOY BI-MONTHLY MEETINGS FOR ACCOUNTABILITY AND SUPPORT
WORK ON THE ONE PROJECT THAT WILL MOVE YOUR PRACTICE FORWARD
Leadership
The Mastermind consists of six participants and is led by architect and executive coach, David Bradley. David’s role is to guide the conversation, monitor time and participation, and provide overall direction for each session. The Mastermind, however, ultimately belongs to the members, and each participant is expected to contribute to the discussion and both give and receive feedback.
Connection
We always start our meetings with a brief check-in and a chance for each participant to share wins from the past two weeks. It’s a great chance to get connected and celebrate progress.
Hot Seats
Each meeting, three of the six participants take part in a 20-minutes “Hot Seat” where they each present the team with their most pressing challenge, provide some backstory if necessary, and make a request of the group for support. The group is encouraged to ask any clarifying questions and then brainstorm solutions, suggest alternative approaches, offer resources, make referrals, and generally help the Hot Seat participant think beyond what they know.
The other three participants sit in the Hot Seat during the next meeting of the month, so everyone gets individual attention each month from the whole group.
Declarations and Accountability
The session wraps up with each member armed with new possibilities and declaring which actions they will take on over the intervening period until the next meeting. We take a look at what accountability structures will be necessary to maintain momentum.
In Between Mastermind Sessions
Members have access to a monitored LinkedIn group to facilitate communication and sharing during the month. You’re also encouraged to support each other through a buddy system and take on other activities assigned by your coach as indicated by the course of conversations that developed or issues that arose during the session.
COMMUNITY –
YOUR STUDIO 3D TEAM
Join up to five of your peers who are all operating at the same level. They are all running their own small firm or practice.
Together, you form a community where you can share your journey and get support from people who understand what you’re up to and who want you to win.
MEETINGS –
GATHER TO COLLABORATE
Twice a month you’ll meet with your team in a mediated session to address the challenges you’re facing, check on progress, set goals, and brainstorm new solutions.
Meetings are 90 minutes in duration and include time to share wins, brainstorm solutions for each member’s challenges, and create accountability structures.
HOT SEATS –
PERSONALIZED ATTENTION
Once a month you sit in the “Hot Seat” – a key component of the MasterMind. When you’re in the Hot Seat you are the sole focus of the group’s attention. You get instant feedback, hear new perspectives, and get better, more numerous ideas than you could conceive on your own – massively reducing your learning curve.
RESULTS –
CREATE AN ACTION PLAN
Together with your coach you will determine the parameters of the project that will generate the best results for your business.
Whether you’re looking for greater efficiency, an ability to scale, proficiency in new business development or something completely unique, we’ll set a course for success.
LEARNING –
PROFESSIONAL RESOURCES
As dictated by the Mastermind’s needs and dynamic, industry professionals will be invited to present on their area of speciality.
Reading lists, coaching tools and other professional resources will be shared as dictated by the content of sessions and discussions.
GUIDANCE –
EXECUTIVE COACHING
Unlike many Mastermind groups, Studio 3D is led by an industry peer and executive coach.
David Bradley is both a licensed architect and professional certified coach. He brings both a knowledge of the industry and the coaching skills to make the most of your Mastermind experience.
90-Minute On-Boarding Session
You’ll meet with David Bradley to learn some coaching basics and determine which area of your practice to focus on for maximum results.
Myers-Briggs Type Indicator
All members will take the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator Test to learn about their personality type and use the results to inform their activities in the group.
Presentations by Industry Professionals
As determined by the conversations that arise in the Mastermind sessions, industry professionals may be invited in to present on areas of expertise that will benefit the group.
Members only Forum
To facilitate conversations and sharing between Mastermind sessions, all participants will have access to a moderated members-only forum on LinkedIn.
Coaching Tools
Masterminds and coaching are different modalities, but they can work well together when used properly.
When appropriate, David will introduce coaching tools and techniques to the group intended to enhance learning or understanding.
Book Reviews
Curated book reviews will be provided to Mastermind participants to broaden the resources available in a format that makes it easy to gather and select the most pertinent information for each member’s professional needs.

“I had some funds available to invest in growing my practice. However, I still did not know how to get from “here” to “there”. I was initially hesitant to take the leap and enroll in the Studio 3D Mastermind, but after meeting David for a free consultation I saw the value he is able to offer as a trained business coach.
“There are a lot of mastermind groups out there led by architects. I think this Mastermind is unique because it is led by an architect who is also a certified coach.
“I felt the advice of peers would be beneficial and the accountability provided by the group would keep me on task. As it turns out, the input from the other Mastermind members as well as David’s ability to get to the essence of an issue or dilemma was invaluable.
“David’s Future Vision exercise helped me dream, and the Reverse Results Plan helped me create steps to reach my goals. As a result, my practice is expanding into the geographic area I hoped to take it. I just signed a contract to design my first vacation home in Spirit Lake! A year ago, my “Okoboji Venture” was just a dream. Now it is becoming a reality. I don’t think I could have done it without the valuable advice and accountability from this group!”

“I enrolled in the Studio 3D Mastermind in order to create an organized plan and process for a business project I was pursing. I was confident about joining the Mastermind because of my previous conversations with David and what I had learned about his approach to coaching.
“It definitely met my expectations! I appreciated the small group setting and the dynamics between the members. Also, the consistency of the meetings kept me on track.
“The only surprise was how this Mastermind supported me through a series of unexpected life events. All things happen for a reason, but I couldn’t have foreseen how much I would need the support of the group during that time. The Mastermind structure and the individual participants all helped me through one of the toughest times in my business and in my life.
“The Studio 3D Mastermind helped me think through the vision I had set for my business. I have goals that I know I can achieve but I needed some structure to get where I want to be, and I benefitted from the positive reinforcement and constructive feedback from those in my field that can help me achieve those goals.
“Because David is a natural coach, I appreciated the coaching aspect that he brought to the Mastermind. The experience made me realize that I really need coaching!”
“The business of architecture and design is very different than other businesses, and I really wanted the targeted and specific interaction with other design professionals. I also hoped that the Mastermind would help get me “unstuck” in some ways.
“The group that David curated resulted in interactions that were encouraging, resourceful, and connected. It was a great group of like-minded folks who seemed to genuinely care about seeing each other move forward. I was surprised at how much I learned from advice that wasn’t given directly to me but to others in the group.
“The initial exercise of writing a future vision and reverse-engineering the steps to that vision was incredibly impactful. I loved (and still do) being able to keep referencing back to that vision and plan and seeing elements come to fruition. The Mastermind really helped me to organize my thoughts and tackle issues in a methodical way. Having a plan with dates attached – and the sharing of the plan – has helped hold me accountable. I have implemented some of the advice given and it has definitely helped me achieve some of the goals set forth in my future vision.
“The Mastermind experience was amazing and I’m so glad I invested in myself in this way. Thanks so much, David!”

Who will be in my cohort? How do you select members?
The Studio 3D Mastermind is intended for architect solopreneurs and small firm owners (typically 5 employees or fewer). Your needs as a small firm entrepreneur are unique and will be best served by people facing similar, but not identical, circumstances and challenges. Members may be just starting out or they may be more seasoned, but you all have the same business goals in common – getting your firm to thrive.
Those interested in joining the Studio 3D Mastermind will be interviewed and screened to ensure that their goals and intentions are a good fit for the group. We are looking for self-motivated individuals who want to grow their practice and are willing to actively participate in the group, contributing to the conversation and the group dynamic by both giving and receiving.
Personal commitment and professional integrity are critical to the success of each member and to the group as a whole. We’re looking for players, not bench warmers – members who recognize the value of teamwork and celebrate the wins of others as much as their own.
What does it mean that this group is a “Founders” program? What does that mean for me?
This particular Studio 3D Mastermind is a pilot program. As such, it’s still in development and some aspects of it may change (although the core concept remains intact). We may experiment with different techniques, add or subtract programming or resources, or try something new and innovative.
In exchange for a discounted “Founders” price, you are asked to take part in the program’s development and provide feedback and constructive criticism. You may be asked to complete a brief survey or questionnaire during the program, and you will complete an exit interview upon completion. All your input will help improve the program for future participants and ensure that it remains an offering of the highest quality.
How do I guarantee a return on my investment?
Of course, like anything in life, you get what you put into it. That said, our commitment is that everyone walks away at the end of the six months having created what they came for. To that end, in your Onboarding Session you will distinguish the one main area of your business the improvement of which will have the greatest impact on your success. Some possible places to look might be:
You get to choose what will make the difference for you! We’ll focus our energies on that topic during the six months and create a project structure that will guide your journey, provide milestones to measure your progress, and give you benchmarks your team can hold you accountable to. The goal is for you to complete the Mastermind, look back, and celebrate having created the breakthrough results you declared.
It’s time to work smarter – not harder.
It’s time to start getting the support and resources you need to get to the next level of your personal and professional growth.
The Studio 3D Mastermind can provide you with the community, the knowledge and the support to make it happen.
Design the next level of your practice with your own Board of Directors!
